Chickpeas are round, beige legumes from the plant Cicer arietinum, one of the oldest cultivated crops, originally domesticated in the Middle East around 7,000 years ago.

The word chickpea comes from the Latin “cicer”, the plant’s genus name, which evolved into Old French chiche and later Middle English chiche pea. Over time, “chiche pea” became chickpea. They’re also widely known as garbanzo beans, especially in Spanish-speaking regions.

Chickpeas are nutty-flavored legumes used in dishes like hummus and curries, valued for their high protein and fiber.
